Well, I'll agree with that statement as long as we qualify it. Enlightenment has the best eye candy out of the box. But... KDE and Gnome both have plenty of downloadable eye candy. Both of these window managers can be customized every which way from Sunday (whatever that means, kind of like what does "dead as a doorknob" really mean when you'd think "dead as a coffin nail" is a more appropriate allusion, but if the mighty Dickens felt unworthy to challenge tradition who am I to do it.). In fact even some of the "lighter" desktops can be loaded down with this eye-candy, were someone so inclined. But out of the box, Enlightenment will do the most to tax your graphics card and chew up your RAM. Why anyone would want to intentionally bog down their Desktop to make it as slow as they possibly can is beyond me, but such is the nature of freedom. For KDE eye candy: look here. www.kde-look.org For Gnome you'll have to google on your own. Ok, I'll bite. Instinctive response: I try to avoid life reducing substances. How long it takes depends on dosage. Other response: Looked up ratpoison in google. Since I'd never heard of it as anything except a substance to avoid. Still not certain what it is, other than knowing it is a sparse window manager. Not sure if it runs on X or not as there is no reference anywhere. Near as I can tell there is no menu or desktop. I'd say it is not a very friendly or usable interface and would question the reason for using it over the CLI. In fact I'd go as far as saying the CLI is probably more user-friendly than ratpoison. But then I would say the same thing about some of the other window managers (like tvm). At least with the CLI you can access help readily. So what do you use, old 386 laptop? IBM PS/2? Copy of Windows ME? AOL CDs? 1x CD-ROMs? ARCNet equipment? Old MAUs and vampire taps? Roll of Thicknet? BASIC (or name your obsolete language) programming book? Shares of Boo.com (or name your defunct web company from the late 90s, early 2000s)? Copy of anything by Jon Katz? The problem there is sensitivity. Children's fingerprints can be quite densely compacted and getting a clear print may be challenging to say the least. Infrared scanners for recording fingerprints and Linux

Anyone done anything with this? A friend has asked me to build a system to record a child's fingerprints, photos, and general characteristics in a user friendly manner and write the data to a "business card cd". Doing all from a laptop. I can handle the photo and the user-friendly interface easily enough, but don't know where to start with the IR fingerprint scanner. Hylafax dial-up problem

Running Gentoo Linux kernel 2.4.22, Hylafax 4.2.0-r1 from portage. I have the following settings in /var/spool/fax/etc/ /var/spool/fax/etc/config.usb_tts_0: GettyArgs: "-b -r -s %s %l" /var/spool/fax/etc/setup.cache: PATHEGETTY='/bin/false' /var/spool/fax/etc/setup.cache: PATHGETTY='/usr/sbin/mgetty' /var/spool/fax/etc/setup.cache: PATHVGETTY='/usr/sbin/vgetty' To achieve this, I edited /usr/sbin/faxsetup and changed PATH_GETTY=/sbin/agetty to PATH_GETTY=/usr/sbin/mgetty then ran faxsetup. When I dial in to the system, the log shows: FaxGetty[4308]: GETTY: START "/sbin/agetty -b -r -s 19200 usb/tts/0", pid 4327 The only way I've been able to get dial-up to work is to rename /sbin/agetty and make it a symlink to /usr/sbin/mgetty.
