I was complaining about the selection of resolutions defaulting to 640x480, 800x600 and 1024x768. I'd like to tell the install program to drop the first two. And stop raining on my parade by showing solutions. It's hard enough to find anything to rant about on Linux today, as it is, without educated users pointing out solutions. ;') I'll have to look for the button you're talking about. What would be really nice to go along with the screen resize is to change the virtual desktop at the same time, so that you don't have to scroll to find menus and apps, and etc. I'm not sure who ever thought it would be neat to have a virtual desktop that is bigger than your screen... oh ... wait ... that's what the original post was about. ;') But then, at Least with Xinerama you don't need to scroll to see the whole desktop. I find scrolling the desktop to see my apps, well, bothersome. Brian

But wouldn't it be nice to be able to tell the installation program to remove those offending lines, or replace them with lines of resolution you want? I know how to do it by editing the X files, and my system already boots that way. However my semi-literate wife would totally lose it if she were to accidentally hit <ctrl><alt><+> and all of a sudden her entire desktop vanishes and is replaced with this new jigsaw puzzle piece of her old screen. This is the way she would see it. She wouldn't recognize the her screen resolution just changed. She would simply reply that that was a stupid thing to do and it just confuses her, couldn't I just get rid of that? As it is she gets frustrated enough, because I have been a lousy system administrator and haven't set up her account by activating all those things she might someday want to use. Help re-installing/restarting Xinerama

I have a Matrox G450 Dual-Head card with two monitors hooked up to it. When I first installed Mandrake Linux 10.0, it gave me the option of stretching the desktop across to the second monitor, using Xinerama, which I chose to do. After a power failure at the house, the display no longer does this, and instead shows the same thing on both monitors. I can't find any configuration option in the GUI configuration system to reinstall/restart Xinerama. Don't you hate it when Occam is right? ;') I never trust anything to be simple when it comes to X. Perhaps, the geeklords of X have grown tired of the complexity as well? One can only hope. I hope to one day be able to tell the X config routine I have a 17" monitor and a video card and I want only 1024x768 resolution or better with more colors than I can count, and have X magically configure it for me. Ah ... I can dream, can't I?

Quick PHP question

I'm sure I could look this up via google or something, but just want ed to ask a quick question to experienced PHP coders out there. Any way to quickly generate a clickable calendar (preferably like a template) with php? Something you could drop into an existing page and add code to do things when a person clicks on a date? I seem to remember at least one install I had recently allowed me to at least remove the lower resolutions, but I could just be dreaming. I know my current desktop has the 640 and 800 options in the X files. I've been to lazy to go and edit them out. Glad you got your video working again. Hopefully you have the changed config file someplace so you can do a "diff" on the original and changed to see what might have been the offending line(s)? Brian

I use Quanta under Suse 9.1. It's pretty nice, with extremely basic code completion. The big thing is syntax highlighting. Although I am really interested in hearing if anyone else has any better ideas. I'm currently working on a very large php project for a client, and anything better than Quanta would be great. Zend Studio also looks like a good choice, but I've never been able to get it to work. It's been a long time since I've tried, though, so I don't remember the specific issue. I may try again tonight and let you know. One of the reasons for confusion on this seemingly obvious question (where's the conf file) is that those of us who've been running X on Linux for a couple of years have been through some changes. Even before the transition to XFree86 v.4 there were occasions where more than one conf file was involved in a sort of cascading effect. Most distros seem to have gone back to the single file now, but the practice still appears to be to include a LOT of different configuration options and have X sort out what works and what doesn't. My curent file, for instance, is unusually simple and only has four mode sections - only one of which works. A while ago I embarked on a quest to get my system running in 100dpi mode instead of the default 75dpi. I found many places where the setting was available, but none of them affected my actual X sessiosn at all. I eventually gave up on it - it doesn't really seem to matter anywhere except when printing graphics. I'm sure more than one of us anticipated a far more complicated problem, and did not trust the simplicity of the obvious answer. Hopefully Leo will let us know if we were wrong.

umkc surplus auction (used hardware at bargain prices)

I got a flyer in the mail, UMKC is having its quarterly surplus auction. Saturday feb 12, viewing of items at 8:00 AM and auction starts at 9:00 AM it's in the "general services building" which is between 52nd and 53rd on Troost. Viewing is also available friday btn 9am and 1pm. they generally have palletes full of three year old Dells and such. -- David L Nicol Volunteer-maintained software never goes over budget.
